Plumbing & electrical glossary.
Short definitions for the terms behind your walls — linked from Hurst Learning Center guides.
A
AFCI
ElectricalArc-fault circuit interrupter — a device that opens a circuit when it detects dangerous arcing that can ignite insulation.
Why it matters: Reduces fire risk on living-area branch circuits, especially with aging wiring.
Aluminum wiring
ElectricalBranch-circuit conductors made of aluminum rather than copper, common in some mid-century homes.
Why it matters: Needs compatible devices and connectors; poor terminations overheat.
Anode rod
PlumbingSacrificial metal rod inside a storage water heater that corrodes preferentially to protect the steel tank.
Why it matters: When the rod is gone, the tank steel is next — especially in hard water.
Automatic transfer switch (ATS)
ElectricalEquipment that disconnects utility power and connects a generator to selected loads in a safe sequence.
Why it matters: Prevents backfeeding the grid and enables unattended standby operation.
B
Backfeeding
ElectricalEnergizing utility lines from a generator through the panel without a proper transfer means.
Why it matters: Extremely dangerous to lineworkers and often illegal.
Breaker trip
ElectricalA circuit breaker opening to protect wiring from overcurrent or a detected fault.
Why it matters: Repeated trips need diagnosis — not endless resets.
BTU
PlumbingBritish thermal unit — a measure of heat output used when sizing gas appliances.
Why it matters: Gas line capacity must support the BTU demand of tankless and other equipment.
C
Check valve
PlumbingA one-way valve that keeps sump discharge from flowing back into the pit.
Why it matters: A failed check valve causes short-cycling and wet basements.
Cleanout
PlumbingAn access fitting on a drain line used for mechanical clearing and inspection.
Why it matters: Lets plumbers clear clogs without destructive opening when accessible.
Combustion air
PlumbingAir required for safe burning of fuel-gas appliances.
Why it matters: Closet installs without adequate air are a carbon monoxide risk.
D
Dedicated circuit
ElectricalA branch circuit intended to serve a single appliance or receptacle path.
Why it matters: Prevents shared-circuit overloads on ranges, dryers, EV chargers, and tools.
Descaling
PlumbingRemoving mineral scale from tankless heat exchangers or related components.
Why it matters: Hard-water scale kills efficiency and shortens tankless life.
Dip tube
PlumbingPlastic tube that directs cold water to the bottom of a storage water heater.
Why it matters: A broken dip tube mixes cold into the hot outlet and ruins recovery.
Double-tap
ElectricalTwo conductors under a breaker or lug designed for only one.
Why it matters: Creates heat and loose connections — a common inspection fail.
E
Exercise cycle
ElectricalScheduled short run of a standby generator to keep it ready.
Why it matters: Idle generators fail when ice storms arrive if never exercised.
Expansion tank
PlumbingSmall tank that absorbs thermal expansion in closed plumbing systems.
Why it matters: Protects water heaters and valves when a PRV or check valve closes the system.
F
Fill valve
PlumbingToilet tank valve that refills water after a flush and should shut off at set level.
Why it matters: A failing fill valve causes running toilets and wasted water.
Flapper
PlumbingSeal at the bottom of a toilet tank that opens to flush and must reseat cleanly.
Why it matters: Worn flappers are the most common cause of silent tank-to-bowl leaks.
G
GFCI
ElectricalGround-fault circuit interrupter — opens when current leaks to ground, protecting against shock.
Why it matters: Required near water and outdoors; resets are clues, not the fix.
H
Hard water
PlumbingWater with high dissolved minerals (typically calcium and magnesium).
Why it matters: Accelerates scale and anode wear in Central Kentucky heaters.
Hose bib
PlumbingOutdoor faucet connection for garden hoses.
Why it matters: Must be winterized or frost-proof to avoid freeze bursts.
I
Interlock kit
ElectricalMechanical panel interlock that prevents utility and generator breakers from both being on.
Why it matters: A safer portable-generator option than illegal backfeeding — still manual.
L
Load center
ElectricalThe electrical panel that distributes power through branch breakers.
Why it matters: Capacity and condition set the ceiling for modern home loads.
Load management
ElectricalControls that shed or prioritize circuits so a smaller generator can serve critical loads.
Why it matters: Often the honest alternative to an oversized whole-home unit.
M
Main breaker
ElectricalThe breaker that disconnects the entire panel from the service.
Why it matters: Service upgrades often change main ampacity with the panel.
Main shutoff
PlumbingValve that stops pressurized water entering the home from the meter or well.
Why it matters: The first move in a burst-pipe emergency.
N
Nameplate
ElectricalManufacturer label listing voltage, amperage, and other electrical ratings.
Why it matters: Drives dedicated-circuit sizing for appliances.
P
Permit
Both TradesAuthorization from the AHJ to perform regulated electrical or plumbing work.
Why it matters: Triggers inspection so installs meet adopted code.
Plumbing vent
PlumbingPipe that equalizes air pressure in drain systems so traps do not siphon.
Why it matters: Bad vents cause gurgles, slow drains, and sewer odor.
Power vent
PlumbingFan-assisted venting for gas water heaters that allows more flexible termination.
Why it matters: Needs power and correct materials — not a reuse of any old B-vent.
PRV (pressure-reducing valve)
PlumbingValve that lowers high municipal pressure to a safer household range.
Why it matters: Failed PRVs cause fixture damage or whole-house low pressure.
R
Recovery rate
PlumbingHow quickly a water heater can reheat a tank after heavy use.
Why it matters: Explains lukewarm showers better than tank size alone.
Rough inspection
Both TradesAHJ inspection of concealed work before walls close.
Why it matters: Closing early creates expensive reopenings.
Rough-in
Both TradesPlumbing and electrical installed before insulation and drywall.
Why it matters: Cheapest time to place panels, baths, generator stubs, and future conduits.
S
Sediment
PlumbingMinerals and debris that settle in water heater tanks.
Why it matters: Causes popping noises, efficiency loss, and early failure.
Service upgrade
ElectricalIncreasing the ampacity of the electrical service and usually the panel.
Why it matters: Required path for many generators, EV chargers, and remodel loads.
Short-cycling
PlumbingAppliance turning on and off in rapid bursts.
Why it matters: Wastes energy and stresses water heaters and sump pumps.
Slab leak
PlumbingPressurized water line leaking under or within a concrete slab.
Why it matters: Early detection beats foundation and finish damage.
Standby generator
ElectricalPermanently installed generator that starts automatically on utility loss.
Why it matters: Ice-storm uptime for heat, well, sump, and critical circuits.
Starting watts
ElectricalExtra wattage motors need briefly when starting.
Why it matters: Undersized generators stall on HVAC and well pumps.
Static pressure
PlumbingWater pressure measured with no fixtures flowing.
Why it matters: Baseline for diagnosing whole-house vs fixture problems.
Subpanel
ElectricalSecondary load center fed from the main panel.
Why it matters: Adds branch capacity but does not fix an undersized main service.
Sump pump
PlumbingPump in a pit that removes groundwater before it floods a basement or crawl.
Why it matters: Primary defense in wet Central Kentucky lots — backup matters in outages.
Supply line
PlumbingPressurized pipe delivering potable water to fixtures and appliances.
Why it matters: Bursts and slab leaks happen on supply lines, not drains.
Surge protective device (SPD)
ElectricalDevice that diverts transient overvoltage away from equipment at the service or panel.
Why it matters: Protects electronics and HVAC controls better than strips alone.
T
T&P valve
PlumbingTemperature-and-pressure relief valve that opens if a water heater overheats or overpressurizes.
Why it matters: Discharge path must stay clear — never cap it.
Tankless water heater
PlumbingOn-demand heater that warms water as it flows through a heat exchanger.
Why it matters: Needs correct gas, vent, and water-quality planning in Kentucky homes.
V
Voltage drop
ElectricalReduction in voltage along conductors under load.
Why it matters: Shows up as dimming lights when large loads start — sometimes normal, sometimes a wiring fault.
